But as we're getting close to the second half of the month I wonder, how well are you doing on your New Year's resolutions? Are you still going at it or have you dropped? Its alright if you drop, everybody does at some point but what matters is whether you drop and bury your goals deep until the year's over or take them again and strive as many times as it takes to get them done.
So what can you do to better achieve them?
A famous quote is: "a goal not written is only a wish". By writing your goals and resolutions on paper you reaffirm your compromise to its achievement and remember what must be done.
2.-Divide it into several smaller steps.
Usually when establishing goals we tend to work on them on the global scale, like "I want to lose weight" or "I want to improve my notes" but as we work on it we see no progress and the effort seems so overwhelming that we lose focus and drop them. By dividing our goals into smaller more achievable steps it becomes easier to focus and get them done.
For example: the losing weight goal could become instead a list of:
*Doing exercise 3 times per day.
*Eat the following healthy foods...
Etc.
3.-Establish times to work on your goals.
If the "when" are we gonna work on our goals is "someday" then that day may simply never come. By assigning times to work on a given goal you get a sense of urgency and set your mind on it.
4.-Consider the cost.
When we're starting the year we usually feel inspired and set goals that as the exhilaration passes become big burdens and even impractical in the times and conditions given, that's because we don't consider the real cost behind them like for example we may wish to lose weight and in the spur of the moment establish an impossible diet and an exercise routine of 5 hours daily! The human body can only take so much and we end up dropping or even worse, injured.
Only do something once you have fully considered the cost and are willing to pay for it to achieve it, otherwise you're better off postponing it.
5.-Get support.
One of the biggest factors in the achievement of our goals comes from friends and family members that get to know our goal. Their support helps one stay and keep trying despite failure because of the desire to not let them down. Building communities centered around a particular goal tend to have even better effect and as such its highly commendable when making resolutions.
And now as a reminder to myself and to share to those interested:
MY NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTIONS.
1.-Eat healthier. Currently I'm on a diet of zero refreshments and more water, along with trying to reduce sugar consumption.
2.-Reduce computer time. My hardest goal so far as I'm a heavy computer user along with spending my free time reading and Programming (I'm a Mechatronics Engineering student but I specialize on Computing and Programming as you've seen which makes heavy computer usage). Currently I'm trying to not use it beyond one hour for recreational purposes on the week and enjoy somewhat on weekends.
3.-Improve my notes. Had a major bump on the road this week with a certain specially hard subject but I'm trying to improve on it. I have decided to spend time studying daily (something I'm not used to doing as I never had the need to before, oh the good times...) along with doing all my homework. My internships are at stake and are a major limitator right now but must overcome them.
That's it for now, I'm trying to focus on them and start small but achieve big. Let's see how well we do.
Oh and for anyone reading my page, feel free to comment your New Year's resolutions!
