PHILOSOPHY.“I think; therefore I am.”
- Rene Descartes Philosophy comes from the greek philos (love) and sophia (knowledge) and can be simplified as love for knowledge. While in the beginnings of human culture it was a term used to describe science and all forms of knowledge in general, in the modern world its used to refer to the science that studies abstraction and truth on itself, branching in many paths such as the study of veracity, knowledge, consciousness among many others. It tends to overlap with other sciences such as neurology, economy, sociology, psychology among many others but differentiates itself from the rest due to the use of inference and less rigid standards than those science uses to determine truth.
Even though Transhumans and even more so Extropians intend to overcome our human limitations, that doesn't mean we'll automatically reject everything that made us human in the first place. While its true that Transhumanism aims to remove those evolutionary disadvantages we hold as humans and the flaws of human thinking and understanding, the need to keep the advantages and improve upon them is something all Transhumanists must seek to attain. |
That means that the study of human and soft sciences becomes necessary for all Transhumanists so as to keep in touch with the good parts of the human condition, parts that will be enhanced using the technology and improved bodies.
Philosophy then becomes an useful tool to analyze our condition as Posthumans in progress and to predict and plan for all the inevitable changes we need to generate in our search for ever increasing enlightenment and better conditions for ourselves and the world at large.
